Rajnikanth, simply on PAA..

The tamil superstar Rajnikanth had viewed PAA recently with his family and was extremely moved with what Amitabh Bachchan had produced on screen. Rajnikanth is a man of humility and has no qualms in admitting how moved he was with the experience. From Yahoo cinemas ( quote ) ” I have always been a great fan of Amitji. I have had the honour of working with him and watching his work down the year but what he has done in this film is unbelievable. I have seen many other great performances by both Indian and Hollywood actors but I have never seen anything like this. Amitji is the greatest. I don’t think anyone else would be able to play the role he has played in ‘PAA’. My admiration for Amitji has grown thousand times more for Amitji and I know my praising his performance means nothing when the whole country is only talking about his performance.”

It is remarkable how down to earth the south super star is and very few in the industry have this trait. His simplicity is as profound as his on screen presence which literally sends his die hard fans into a state of frenzy. I recall watching the first day first show of his block buster Sivaji in Melbourne’s Palais theatre at St Kilda a couple of years back and this experience still remains with me. A kilometer stretch leading to the theatre was swarming with his fans waiting to get tickets for the show. Never before had I witnessed the southern diaspora on the roads unitedly in this fashion in the laid back city. Most of the tamil movies get released in Australia given the large number of tamils from India and Sri Lanka who have made Australia their home. Coming back to the movie, when Rajnikanth first appeared on screen there were coins and streamers whizzing past my head and there were groups performing “aarthie” with their lighters. I have only read about these happenings in the past but to witness this phenomenon first hand was an experience. My thoughts at that time was, if one man could produce this passion in a land so far away, what would it be like in the heart of tamil nadu?

A Maharashtrian by birth (aka Shivaji Rao Gaekwad ) who spent the first few years struggling in Bangalore, whilst working as a bus conductor and vying for small roles on stage, this man has indeed come a long way. I would not credit the luck factor as a great attributor to his success but I would credit his humility as a greater factor. He remains humbled with the fan following that he has and the wealth that he has created. He tends not to forget the underprivileged and is known for his untiring charity work.

In a state where politics and cinema mix as freely as lime and soda, Rajnikanth has not plunged his head into deep political waters as yet despite the immense pressure to do so from various quarters. I think his soul wishes not to be tarnished with the political dogmas that surround the state. He spends a good amount of his time at the himalayas in meditation and if and when he decides to take the political plunge he would need to move the himalayas to the south of India and his fans would think it is simply sssuper.!

A superstar admiring another superstar … written superbly by a going to – be superstar

  2. Archana – Good to see you here and thank you for your comment:)

  3. Sharmila,

Why is this not on AB’s blog? Or did I miss it? Rajni is one of my top favs. To be honest, if I had just enough money see two movies from Kamalahasan, Rajni & AB, I might drop AB and see Kamal and Rajni in that order.

    Sudhir

  4. Good research too.

  5. What do you mean not on AB’s blog? I pasted this link on my comment today at 113. Yes, Rajni is my favorite too with Kamalhaasan and AB! I am not sure if it is a good idea to flood AB’s blog with non AB comments, so I tend to leave links there. But I did leave this one today.

  6. And again Thank you.

  7. Fantastic piece here Sharmila. Thanks for dropping by to Master Praz. Don’t mind if i share this piece on my blog. Also I’ve added you to my blog roll šŸ™‚

  8. Thanks Master Praz. That is so nice of u šŸ™‚ and glad you liked the Rajni piece, I am a BIG fan of Rajni, Kamal and of course AB.

OMG that’s my 3 absolute all time favourites too AND Pankuj Kapur (hardly in the same sphere as far as stardom is concerned but certainly as far as acting is imo) šŸ™‚

  9. Oh yes, Pakaj Kapur has never reached those heights. But neither have Naseerudin Shah , Irfan Khan, Om Puri..stardom is probably not just about acting!

    • masterpraz Says:

Agree, Stardom and pure acting can be worlds apart. Kamal, Rajni and Bachchan (him more-so) are great examples of people who’ve achieved both.

Nasser, Om, Pankuj, Irrfan, Kay Kay are pure actors in that sense and less stars…

  10. Master Praz – Yes, but Rajni probably has not experimented as much as Kamal and more recently AB, but with Rajni, being a league by himself and with his unique id, I doubt we can accept Rajni any other way than the way he is!

    • masterpraz Says:

with the exception of an odd THALAPATHI we rarely get to see Rajni “act” outside of the Superstar sphere much, however with films as entertaining as PADAIYAPPA and CHANDRAMUKHI who can complain really šŸ™‚

  11. Praz – Absolutely, I enjoyed Sivaji too quite a bit.

  12. Dear Sharmila

    God bless you!
    Love always…

We all r waiting for this only…

As u said Rajnikanth attained this position only by his great human character and his hard work nothing else. He has always been a role model for the youngsters. Still a lot of good things to learn from him.
this is the first time, i m putting comments on this blog. excellent writiing abt our own supertstar. keep it up.
