Tiger Tiger burning bright…

What is the obsession with celebrities and their infidel ways, why does the world wait for great men to falter and what better entertainment to the world do these men provide? Tiger has been in the news ever since he rammed his cadillac into a tree and a fire hydrant near his residence in Florida. Every week there has been an allegation of an affair ranging from cocktail waitress to night club managers. The first billionaire in the sporting world and he was the Tiger with lofty drives that no one could beat, the Tiger drove himself into the biggest bunker of his life not on the fairway. Anderson Cooper has devoted a segment for Tiger on a daily basis along with a few other anchors and damsels by the dozen are continuing to roll out of the cupboards from Minnie mouse to Daisy ducks. In my humble opinion the audience enjoy the incessant news coverage of his “transgressions” and “sins” either because they are happy that the billionaire celebrity is not the perfect Tiger that the world thought he was or they have a genuine concern for his well being. The latter sounds a bit feeble. The American public are obsessed with their sportsmen fouling from Mike Tyson to OJ Simpson and now Tiger. Not to forget that they had a President who redefined the terminology for infidelity. At this hour I think it is important to dedicate the famous poem by William Blake to Tiger with a new meaning.

Tiger tiger burning bright, in the forests if the night – Tiger turned on the headlights of the Cadillac Escalade and blazed his way into a tree one dark night

What immortal hand or eye ,Could frame thy fearful symmetry? – Was your symmetry framed by years of practicing your long drives

In what distant deeps or skies Burnt the fire in thine eyes? – The eyes that burnt with the desire to be the greatest golfer who could score the maximum birdies

On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand dare seize the fire? – Pray tell what bold hands dialed your phone number

And what shoulder, and what art? Could twist the sinews of thy heart? – Your powerful swings made many hearts flutter

And when thy heart began to beat, What dread hand, and what dread feet? – Your heart raced faster than your feet when the Mrs chased  you with a golf club

What the hammer? What the chain? In what furnace was thy brain? – Where was your brains?

What the anvil? What dread grasp Dare its deadly terrors clasp?  – The lawsuits are going to grasp you, the terror awaits you

When the stars threw down their spears, And watered heaven with their tears – The claim will be a starry 500 million USD even if you cry shedding salty tears

Did he smile his work to see? Did he who made the Lamb, make thee? – Your lawyers and hers smile, they will eat a lamb steak every night after teeing you off in style.

  1. Thats very insightful, Sharmila. Thank you. Sudhir

  2. Ha Ha Sudhir, your comment is hilarious. Are you the same Sudhir from AB Blog, Bertie Wooster?

  3. Lakshmi Jag Says:

Good one Sharmila…..sad but true. Yesterday I was discussing with a lawyer about the same and that media should leave him alone for his family to heal, her response was that media has every right to question him because he got all the ad contracts based on his ‘clean’ image. Something to ponder on….

  4. Thanks Lakshmi,I heard a few of his endorsements have already been cancelled. Gatorade has already dropped him like a hot potato. Yes, in all fairness private life should be kept private but Tiger is above it all, hence so much interest. Tiger is akin to Tendulkar for India, one wrong move by Tendulkar and he would be finished. I doubt in fact if we would ever forgive an erring Tendulkar.

  5. Dear Sharmila,

When ordinary mortals like us are susceptible to such transgressions, one can imagine the plight of those who are associated with glamorous and highly demanding professions like films and sports. On the one hand, due to the enormous pressures of training, touring and keeping their rankings intact, their married life is reduced to nothing but just a social status, while on the other hand because of the glamorous side to their persona, they are constantly exposed to various vulnerable situations. Under such circumstances, keeping one’s integrity intact takes a lot of character and saintly devotion towards one’s spouse and family. Sachin Tendulkar and Shah Rukh Khan are great examples among superstars who possess such rare qualities.

Thank you, I thoroughly enjoyed the poem.

  6. Melwyn – Well said,I agree with you in toto. When you reach the levels that these people have, their life takes a whole new meaning. It is difficult for them to think like ordinary mortals, who themselves cannot ward off temptation. Yes, SRK and Tendulkar do lead by example and lets hope they always do!

  7. Hey, Awesome writing. Loved it. I think u creamed Tiger in the poem.
I have always loved that poem and loved ur version too

  8. Thanks Sups, glad you like it and great to see you here.
