From the diary – IIFA 2009, Macau. Who said anything about awards?

Two days in blustery June at the Venetian was a showcase for Bollywood glitz and glamour at it’s very best. I am someone who has jelly knees for cricket and to the same extent for Bollywood frolic, but that weekend I must say that cricket and Bollywood have not finished in a tie. I guess the adage; there is no business like show business can be wholeheartedly agreed upon by those who attended the IIFA awards at the Macau Venetian. Venetian by its singular presence is nothing short of grand, and with our Bollywood stars descending there added to the magnificence.
As we entered the Venetian on Friday for our two days of frolic, Mr.Ramesh Sippy was ambling around near the entrance looking a bit lost and seeking directions from a Venetian staff and Kiran Juneja looked rather odd in her flowing white draupadi styled sari in the middle a contingent of chinese people in the lobby. We then went on to spot Boman Irani who was obliging some very excited fans, a jolly good fellow I must say with a lot of patience.
On the evening of Day 1 there were fringe events that included private parties followed by a fashion extravaganza. I was able to take a few photos of the stars who landed for that.
Greek god Hrithik with his now very worried Suzanne, ( fresh from the allegation of Hrithik’s affair with Barbara ) Roshans , Abhishek sans Ash, ravishing Raveena, Chi Chi Govinda, stunning Bips a singular cause for global warming as per Boman Irani, the dashing Kabir Bedi with his ” new ” woman, Lyrical Javed and his wife Shabana who both wore ” I am god’s gift to mankind ” look, hip Farhan Akhthar, know it all Ashutosh Gowarikar, crooning Illa Arun who adorned on her half of Banaras’s bindis and bangles, Zayad Khan, Priyanka, Maddy, Akshay Khanna, rolling Kapoor brothers including Randhir, petite Genelia, Anushka, Diya, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Milind Soman, Dino Morea, Minisha Lamba. Arshad Warsi, Lara Datta etc! TV star Ronit Roy was head of security that night I think and guess who has not been spending any time on the cricket field? Srishanth of course. Just a point about Ronit , he was taking his job very seriously and looked more vigilant than the CIA. He was protecting Big B.
A special mention to witty Anil Kapoor who looks half his age that forced me to remark ” you still look good Mr. Kapoor to which he boomed, ” What do you mean ” still “?”The most gracious and charming of the stars was Sushmita who looks like a Miss hundred Universes, what a charming woman. I really could not help myself and had to say, ” Wow, you are so beautiful”, pat came the reply ” you look so beautiful yourself”. Now, this was probably a truly Kodak moment or a Jay Leno ” you are so dumb moment ” or a classic Kitty Kelly “bitchy” moment. I do not know, and probably would prefer to leave it at that.
Most of them wore a hundred watt smile with the exception of Abbas Mastan, the duo brothers looked pretty bored. Dressed in white, they were attached to the hip like Siamese twins and it appeared that they were also visiting the restrooms in unison.
Last but not the least was the man himself, Big B, surrounded by four permanent bodyguards. His baritone voice enough to make everyone look like a geek in front of him. What a man! Gracious and charming indeed!
Day two was spent watching the Cirque du soleil show at the Venetian prior to the event. The awards were to start at 7 PM local time which became IST. The Indian stretchable time stretched to a 9PM start. Around 8.30 pm, the most perfect woman on earth arrived with Abhishek. Ash ensured that she was not seen prior to the awards including the frill events unlike the other stars. Brand value increases with scarcity I think. Ladies if you have tried very hard to find any flaw in this woman, I urge you to stop. She is flawless. The common complaint about Ash is her artificiality. For a woman who has the perfect looks, wealth, brains, talent, influential husband, she is as real as she can be. On the night, she shone like a hundred moons and executed her performance at the event with perfection. And what can I say about Abhishek, down to earth would be appropriate. Boman Irani and Ritesh Deshmukh as usual had the audience in splits with their witty compeering and Lara co hosted the show with an unmatched élan. David Dhawan mentioned during the show, that he and Govinda lost a couple of kilos walking around the sprawling Venetian.
The event finished at 2.30 AM and pretty sure that half the crowd had fallen asleep. Of course there was a grand awards ceremony, lot of naach gaana and being IIFA the Bacchans never left the stage, they were either collecting awards , giving awards or speaking about the awards and of course, dancing at the awards. But at the end of it, I must just say that we had a bolly good time!
