The end of hypocrisy… By Pritish Nandy

I love Valentine’s Day. If I had my way, every day would be V-Day. For if there’s one thing this world can do with more of, its love. I really don’t care if that love is fake, fickle, false, phoney or faithless. Nor do I care if it involves tantrums, treachery, tetchiness, or plain, old fashioned two-timing trickery. Love finds its own way and even when it goes wrong it doesn’t mean you must lose faith in it. Love, in that sense, is the only insignia of hope in a world where hope is constantly falling short. That’s what makes it so special.

To be honest, I have forgotten where V-Day came from. But if I recall right it has nothing to do with love. Valentine was the name given to several martyrs in the early years of Christianity. Later came St Valentine, also a martyr, whose story subsumed the earlier ones. For those who think it’s a Christian festival, it may amuse you to know that, in 1969, Valentine’s Day was removed from the official Roman Catholic Calendar. But that hasn’t stopped consumer brands from growing the event in size and scale every year. Since martyrdom is no more fashionable, the theme is now love. So those who chase young couples on V-Day and vandalise stores because they think it’s a symbol of religious colonization should think again. Its consumer colonization they ought to be fighting. Hallmark, not the Church.

Why is V-Day important? Because we have all lost sight of love. Ask people what they love. They will come back to you with the most inane answers. Some will say their career. Others will talk about their Blackberry Bold or their X5. Many will say that there’s no love greater than watching Sachin bat or Bhajji bowl. Some may even refer to Alienware. Last weekend everyone was in love with Midnight Romance when it won the Derby. Every day, we enlarge our idea of love to encompass all things on this planet but the one thing we are actually meant to love: The Opposite Sex. In fact, there are a growing number of people who celebrate V-Day by showing love for their own sex.  Without being politically impolite, I think a separate day to celebrate same sex love may be better. After all, we have separate days to celebrate love for our mothers, our fathers, our teachers, our pets. Let’s keep 14 February only for love as we always knew it, between a man and a woman. We may be an endangered species today but we were the ones who thought of V-Day first.

As far as I am concerned, you can stop calling V-Day, Valentine’s Day. Call it by any name you like. Krishna Diwas anyone? Radha ka Tyohar? Track down a great lover, any great lover from the past and name the day after him. Or her. No, there’s no gender bias here. Call it even after Mallanaga, prophet of the asuras, to whom the origin of the erotic sciences is often attributed. But if you ask me, the best choice would be the great 4th century scholar and sage, Vatsyayana. He was the one who not only celebrated love but found a thousand charming ways to actually teach us how to do it. Without his scholarship of all things wise and wonderful and his knowledge of how to put imagination into action, we would have been a lesser civilisation. We owe to him, his 1250 verses and 36 chapters of the Kamasutra, and the great artists who put his ideas into images, our victory in the battle against the boring missionary position. We were always suspicious of missionaries. But Vatsyayana pre-empted them many centuries ago by teaching us some of the most delightful ways to subvert the tedium of the entirely unimaginative missionary take on love. So, to celebrate our great Indian heritage, may I suggest we stick to calling it V-Day? V for Vatsyayana. No one can object to that I am sure. Certainly not the Sri Ram Sena nor Mr Muthalik of the pink panties fame.

Once we Indianize V-Day we can then go ahead and celebrate it in whichever way we want. All the fun stuff young people do surreptitiously during Navratri and Garba can actually be done more openly on V-Day when we rejoice in the great love between our two sexes. (The transgenders can have their own V-Day just as same sex lovers can. So can the khaps of Haryana, who could get their thrills on a V-Day of their own by killing kids for falling in love without their prior permission.) Hopefully, this would end some of the sham and hypocrisy we have become so used to when it comes to matters of love and sex. Instead, we could celebrate the freedoms that the great sage Vatsyayana urged us to 17 centuries ago when he wrote the most liberating treatise of all time.

  1. FAO: Mr. Nandy and Sharmila,

Hope does not rhyme with history, said someone in one of the history books.

End of hypocracy or end of denial is for one to choose and one to decide. From your ivory towers this is scarcely a call for introspection.

You have left enough space for yourself to deny that you are challenging the majority Hindus in the country to adopt a secular view of the V-day.

I wonder why you did not specifically tempt voluptous Muslim women in this booby trap. There are many in the film industrry like Katrina Kaif. May be you reserved the post to those who are bound by the Hindu modest-class cultural values.

Sura 24: 31 of the Holy Qura’an says:

And say to the believing women, that they should lower their gaze and guard their chastity; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their womenfolk, or those whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of carnla desires, or small children who have no carnal knowledge of women; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O you believers! Turn you all together towards Allah, that you may achieve success.

Ram Sena and Mr. Mutallik, Mr. Nandy? Would you dare speak against the Sura above?

    End of hypocracy? Really?

    • Interesting.. Actually there was not much talk of the Shiv Sena and all those crazy groups in Karnataka that went around bashing up young girls in pubs etc.

  2. Omg…! Can’t believe…that in name of Love…Mr.Nandy just talked about Sex repeatedly…
Sex remains the celebration of Love…only when two persons are in Love…not otherwise…
The definition changes then into basic need, basic animal instinct, infatuation…etc etc…when love is not involved…
    What is Love…! btw…?

    • MonaLisa,

Mr. Nandy seems to be following a designed template. Whatever it is, it’s certainly not devious enough to be labelled a poltical conspiraccy. He is not banking on India or Indians for any value-based discussions. Quite the contrary.

Provocation does not appear to be a part of his schema as far as I can see from the last few posts. Neither is he the type of intellectual who is devoted to a particular regional interest like Dr. Subramanian Swami or Cho Ramaswamy.

He sounds more like a deceptive Bishop re-wording the diktats of the local diocese. Even in this comparison there is a basic contradiction. Some of these priests in recent times have gained notoreity for being paedophiles. Mr. Nandy certainly does not sound like one.

Lets wait and watch. Only time will tell. Civilisations are not undone by one casual blogger.

      • Reader,

Do you think that a blogger/writer invariably has an agenda?

      • Renate,

An agenda or conspiracy is most uncommon.

Most bloggers have good values and want to share them.

      • At least I’d like to believe that.

      • Lol..Reader…
        should i just say…”You are right sir…Reader…sir..!” 🙂

      • MonaLisa,

Me no Sir… no knight… me just another reader… 🙂

      • Lol…Reader…
I thought that’s what you like to hear…so better yet …agree on whatever you say… 🙂
Saves lot of things like smile on everyone’s face, sanity, harmony…etc etc… so why not if everybody’s happy…just me agreeing on whatever ou say…! I can be a bigger person sometime…you know…! 🙂 🙂

      • A MonaLisa who agrees with all that I say? Thats a contradiction in terms…

        Proposition is not accepted.

You can grow bigger or stronger and join the Women’s Wrestling Federation.

But growing older is another thingy…

        I mean ‘thing’…..

        🙂

  3. Reader,

That’s what I believe, too. I was just wondering about your scrutiny of Pritish Nandy’s motivations.

    History rhymes with mystery. Why?

    • Renate,

Beats me. You tell me why! 🙂

      About Pritish Nandy:

No, Renate. Nothing personal. He does not write social literature that interests me. I read John Rawls, Rousseau, Amartya Sen, Adam Smith. Sartre and similar writers of social literature.

I just comment off-the-cuff on Nandy and only because Sharmila puts his posts on this page.

      • Lol…Reader…
Contradictions are the fun parts of our lives…
Life can be dull and boring if everything goes in a straight line…
Thank you for rejecting the proposal…I feel so relieved…hahahhhaa…. 🙂
Do you really think…I need to join a club to wrestle…!? What are you there for…!? Did you find a new partner…!? Are you dropping me like a hot potato..!? 😦
        lol…your ‘thingy’ thing reminds me…that I got none…can I borrow…one..!? omg…! What am i saying…!? I am going crazy tonight…! must be the effect of Mr.Nandy’s post…! 🙂

      • MonaLisa,

You are perhaps somewhere on the pacific rim. I know it’s chilling out there. 🙂

Add Nandy’s post, don’t you wish he was 25 years younger to do something real? 🙂

      • “A MonaLisa”……Reader…!!!!!?????
        Don’t know how i missed it last night…!? 😦
        Are you clonning me…!?

      • MonaLisa,

Not cloning you at all. That would be a crime against humanity.

        Why did you feel that?

      • Crime against Humanity…!? Whoa…Whoa…! What are you implying here…!?… Reader…!
You worte ” A MonaLisa “….what does that suggest..!? Besides you mentioned one on your blog…so asked..
If you remember….you found one last year on MM too…

      • Don’t you worry. There can be no other MonaLisa on this planet except you.

I don’t remember MM, but I know only two MonaLisa’s. One is framed in the Louvre in Paris and another is chilling in the US somewhere.

        🙂

  4. Reader,

Yes, we need to have something to talk about down here. I’m just not sure I have much to say about the Kamasutra following closely on the heels of the war of the genders.

    • Renate,

Don’t talk about Kama Sutra. That book is all about action. Anyone who wants to talk about it is too old for the book.

There are three ages of adult-hood. The first when people talk less and do more; second when they talk a bit and do a bit; third when they only talk talk talk, do nothing…

Kama Sutra, the book, is only for the first type…

      • Hmmm, very interesting.

I guess this book is lucky that it is about an evergreen topic which will always assure it a readership.

Otherwise a how-to for people who are too busy with doing for reading a how-to would be out of print very quickly.

      • Renate,

There are always wheels within wheels in writers’ clubs.

Deepak Chopra has just released his latest book called Seven Laws of Love, a reference text on Kama Sutra.

He is a close friend of Pritish Nandy.

      • Lol…Reader…
What do i care if he is in that position or not…or should be 25 yrs younger or not…!? Not my concern…
one thing is for sure though…if he could do it…we wouldn’t have this precious post to read and react….
See…! How kind he is…! we would have been in loss of so much fun otherwise…! 🙂

      • 🙂 🙂 Reader…!

  5. Reader,

I think I heard about this book. Isn’t it about a group of old guys reminiscing about what they may or may not have missed?

    • Renate,

May be it is. I saw that book three days ago in the airpot duty-free shop next to the condom counter.

I didn’t buy the book. Just leafed through and returned it to the shelf.

In my lexicon, books about sex are a waste of time. Sex is a vocational skill only learnt through practice – not on twitter from girls half your age and facebook.

      • A whole counter for condoms – what an advanced civilization you live in 😛

      • Renate,

It’s not as advanced as some other states like Azerbaijan in the erswhile USSR.

I remember in a place called Baku, there, I had once gone for visit to the British Petroleum location, condoms were given free on arrival!

The women in Baku earn less than 100 dollars a month from their normal occupations. They choose the easiest way to make money which is flesh trade.

I could write a hilarous episode of my encounters in a restaurant during my stay in that place. But I don’t think it is funny.

Poverty ruins the moral sentiments of women folk. The locals in Ukraine, Georgia, Uzbek, Azerbaijan etc are in bad shape. Entire nations are turned into brothels.

      • Interesting….! How skillful are you Reader…in that vocational art…!? 🙂

      • Hilarious, but not funny….pray tell, Sir Knight

      • MonaLisa,

As I said earlier, words are inadequate to describe such skills.

All I can say is that I can now train the new generation and audit their performance.

See, my enterpreneurial instincts tell me, never write a book on sex when you can start a school… 😛

  6. Why Renate…!? Are you not the part of that civilization of today…!?

    • Haha, MonaLisa, I like to believe that I am. I was just impressed by the whole counter….always be prepared when you fly to a new country I guess…. 😀

      • Lol…Renate…That’s amusing…really…! The entire counter full of colorful balloons…hahaha…keep some in purse…! 🙂

  7. Yep…It’s not funny…Reader…
It’s sad when a girl or a woman is forced to get into the business/profession of flesh & blood. It’s really a heart breaking situation and a failure of that particular governance and society…
I don’t know whether you watched “Iriena Palm” or not…but it’s a kind of movie ..that really touches one’s heart…very simple and not very artistically made…yet conveys the message…

    • MonaLisa, Renate,

A poor man will labor for 16 hours as a coolie at material loading yards where there is no machinary, but his wife will choose to sleep around for an hour or two and make more money than him.

Poverty is forced by the state but flesh trade is not forced on women as one would like to believe.

Thats why I maintain that morality or a code of ethics are conceptually distanced from the physical aspects of life.

      • Reader,

A lose-lose proposition for the woman. She was born into poverty and ignorance, sees what her mother and sister do and really does not have any means at her disposal to make a different choice.

A lose-lose proposition for the man. He makes less money with more work, has no choice about the matter and the only way to make himself feel better about all of this is to look down on the woman.

God help us all…or will He??

      • Renate,

Thats where family values make a difference, don’t you think?

It takes the young half their age to realize that the cause of their plight is the social choices available to them. By the time they realize it, if they ever do, it’s often too late.

A win-win proposition is rare and far between nowadays. Those are when the woman is strong and refuses to accept the society and it’s pragmatic ideosynchracies. She becomes a home-maker and manages the house-hold and children within the available means.

      • Well…Reader…
It may or may not appear so from the distances…unaware of the circumstance and all that…the choices we make or at times it felt like that we are forced to make are right choices or not…considering available options…
When a life is put on line…one can do anything to save a near & dear ones…
After all who wrote those codes of conducts and ethics and morality…!? True it is…it is far far away when we talk about reality…
Do you think it prevailed sometime or anytime in past..long time ago…!? Or it has been some bookish thing from very begining…!?

      • Reader,

Or she stands on her own feet and makes her own rules.

But for both these options she must have a dignified start into her life and once poverty is too great that is not a given.

      • MonaLisa,

Such books are always written after the events occur in real life.

Thats what I meant when I quoted that hope and history do not rhyme.

Code of ethics are not written in books first. They are practised. Either a person dwells on them consciously or it is thrust on him/her by others. That is a choice.

      • Renate,

In a family type of set-up, which I call the modest-class, they are given the opportunity to stand on their own feet. The parents send them to basic education that is provided free of cost by the state.

However, it was rare that a girl was allowed to remain unmarried. In India, most parents force them into marriages before they become too old.

That scenario is changing slowly as girls have begun to opt for taking care of the parents in their old age at home instead of an uncertain life on the streets.

      • Reader,

So the choice for a middle-class is either to get married or take care of her parents? The only alternative is “life on the streets”? What does that mean?

Have I “lived on the streets” as a single University-employed woman?

If so, I can only recommend it to an Indian girl.

      • Renate,

        Not middle-class. Modest class.

You speak my words. Opportunities should not be exported or out-sourced.

Be a man or a woman, the first opportunity for development of academic skills must be reserved for the citizen of the country. That’s not politics as many tend to believe. It’s a constituitional pre-requisit.

    • Humphh….middle-class GIRL

      • Modest-class Girl… why hummph?

      • ‘Cos I had to make a correction, forgot the word “girl” 🙄

And I guess another one for converting your modest-class into middle class.

        What’s the exact difference, anyway?

      • Renate,

Middle class is an economic measure. Modest class is a cultural standard.

Corrections are good, if you know me. I can never write anything without corrections! 🙄

  8. Reader…
True…words are inadequate to describe any skill…one has to appear in exam ..to get the grade or marks… 🙂
So we can’t pass or fail you..or decide if your claim is true or not…or shall be licenced to open up The School…. 🙂
Btw …when are you opening The School for that…!? 🙂

  9. Reader…
What’s so special about Dhobi Ghat and its star cast…that you have to wait…you can find many if you look around….not sure how true it is …but rumor has it that India is becoming a bigger Sex Market than some other places…in the world..

    • MonaLisa,

Thats no true. India is close to nothing compared to the USSR states, China, Africa and South America.

Indians are still stuck with their ancient family customs. That’s what Pritish Nandy and his team are trying to breach. I was amused to see him promorting Valentines day as an opportunity for random sex.

      • Reader…
I think he is trying hard to be popular amongst younger generation …flaunting such random sex ideas are not to be popular amonst his own generation for sure…
What custom are you talking about…!? Take today’s generation…you will find more divorced than married among them…take a survey…how many had sex before marriage and how many girl friens/boyfriends they had…how many believe in monogamy…and how many in polygamy…
How many have extra marital affairs…and how comfortable do they feel about it..!? and so on….

      • MonaLisa,

The female to male ratio in India, as of 2010, is 913 to 1000.

So, at least 100 men are happy and free of the additional baggage.

The divorce rate in India is close to nothing.

There four different judicial processes in the divorce law.

The Christian Marraige act where the priest has to accept the divorce, the rate is less than 0.5% because ‘incompatibility’ is not accepted as a good reason for divorce.

The Muslim Shariah where divorce is loaded in favor of the man.

The Hindu marriage act that requires 7 different causes for the divorce.

The Parsi marriage act which has never had the occassion to be used so far. They never divorce because they marry within the family.

I am not expecting Mr. Nandy’s idea of street-side or club-house sex to breach the existing set-up.

Thats why I said civilisations are not undone by drug peddlars.

      • MonaLisa,

For a population of 1.2 billion, that comes to about 60 million men. That can make a good maoist army.

      • Reader,

Divorce is only for already married people. Let’s give up on those and move on to the next generation.

I hope by 2030 at least a hundred of the girls have found out that a life without “the additional baggage” may not be such a bad thing.

And when you think about it, this may not be such a bad thing for the maintenance of family values and the institution of marriage either. A lifetime commitment taken on voluntarily rather than forced will do much to keep the spirits up.

      • Renate,

I second that. In Sanskrit it is called Gandharva marriage. A marriage by choice. Instead of ceremonial enforcement.

  10. Reader,

Don’t you think, Pritish Nandy preaches to the converted? As you said, one blogger is not going to bring down a civilization. That is reserved to all that’s called “modern”

    • Renate,

Very good observation. You are spot on. I was trying to find out who is the post addressed to. As you say, it seems to be written for the ‘modern’ converted.

      • Reader…
That kind of marriages exist in name of live in relationships or contractual basis…
stay in as long as one wants…then separate it out ..
In my opinion women are the losers in this kind of arrangements…and after 2-3 kids…she has to be the sole responsivle single parent…is not fun at all…

      • MonaLisa,

A woman must have the freedom to decide whom she wants to marry. That freedom goes with whatever responsibilities come with it. Asking the government or church or temple or mosque to make laws in her favor will not help.

  11. Obviously it is targeted towards younger generation…however old one is not so far behind or away from it…
What values are you talking about…!? Those so called family guys are so much into all these…wife remains as a homemaker to take care of home and children…in outside world what he does… not many know about it…even if his family knows about it…they have no choice but to ignore it…him being the provider..the head of the family…money talks…money rules…everywhere…
The stories we hear here about India and Indian society are such that ..if that’s called “modern”…we are living in a very backward society in US…

    • MonaLisa,

You are right about the backwardness. The IQ of Americans is known to be the lowest in the world.

Values are a big subject. I don’t think they are limited to money or earnings. And they have nothing to do with gender.

      • Reader…
I don’t think it is about making laws in her favour…it is a kind of protection for her and children…man being the bread winner…
There are always some loop holes in any law…so ppl take advantage of it…
There should be a common civil law applicable to all civilians equally…no mingling of any religion in to that helps..

  12. Reader,

I wonder why that is, the low IQ of the average American. Not all, mind you, there are some very smart people here.

I have my own theories about some of the Americans’ traits. It’s a very recent immigration country, remember?

At least about the immigrants from Germany. Anyone with ADHD or similarly chaotic mindsets would not do well in Germany, a country where orderliness is still highly prized. I can tell you stories that you would not believe. So these guys would be the first ones lining up to get out.

One of my first and best remembered culture shocks in the US as a freshly arrived German was visiting prospective rental apartments – and seeing the mess people chose to live in.

    • Renate,

Agree. America has the best constitution in the world for a human society but somehow the most disturbed lifestyles. It seems like an apparent contradiction.

Germans, Romans, Asians and the Greek have a long historical premise to bank on.

I had said it once with reference to one of your comments. Evolution is as much about the mind as it is about the physical adjustments dictated by the natural environment.

  13. Reader…
Stick to the subject….we are not talking abput IQ here…
It is about what Mr.Nandy is trying to sell openly….already exists and prevails in Indian society in a larget scale than one can think of…
All those ppl feeling very proud of their Indian culture…would be very shocked and ashamed if those stories are real…
Ethics and values on the scale of one to ten…one being the miminum….are probably jump between one and two…not more than that…they say…

    • MonaLisa,

Mr. Nandy cannot ‘openly’ advocate anti-religious feelings. If he had tried that, our islamic brotherhood would have been drying his hide on the sea coast at Mumbai.

‘End of hypocracy’ as he calls the post is nothing to do with the Indian civilisation. Only thing that is obvious to me is that Mr. Nandy’s pride does not depend on the Indian culture.

  14. Reader….
when you try to appeal a certain age group of the masses …it doesn’t have to be religion based…it is more like a separate cult … the example he gave of some celebration …to have random sex…is definitely targeting younger generation…
I don’t know why he calls it an end of hypocricy..!? The most Hypocritical thing he himself is suggesting..that to have random sex in name of celebrating a particular day…is it not hypocricy to name it love…and intermingle it with treachery, phoneyness…jumping all over the place…using all adjectives…!?

    • MonaLisa,

If he knows it already, it wouldn’t be hypocracy… it is deliberate mischief…

He should be grimly smiling over a large, patiala peg…

Perhaps we are over-rating the domain of influence merely because his egalitarian musings are printed and assuming that they could be available to posterity for evaluation. I doubt that. The future is going to so full of blogs and twitterati type platforms, such brainstorming pages will be ibid.

  15. Reader….
Change is a change…may not be so radical at first…but creeps in slowly to the roots…..
Have you ever heard about gay sex or marriages in India…!? Now they are very much in practice..
Drug peddlers might not be able to change the entire civilization…they ruin the vulnerable coastal region…one over the edge…is a definite…

    • MonaLisa,

Nothing radical about gays and transvestites in India. They were here before God created Adam and Eve.

I said, drug peddlars not in the real sense of selling morphine or cocaine. I meant as in playing ‘Pide Piper’ to the ‘modern’ converted rats and children.

      • Reader…
What different did i say…!? I said the same thing…
Me not talking about Real peddlers either…
Look…I have no clue how many read his articles in news paper or visits his blog…
All i know is…no matter how stupid or silly thought it seems…if it touches to a particular vulnerable section of masses…it creeps in…if not…nothing like it…!
We dissect it here as that’s what we have on hand right now…otherwise we might not even give it a thought and just move on…

      • MonaLisa,

Yes, you said the same thing. I misread that.

As you said we dissect it and move on.

  16. Reader…
Bid you a beautiful day ahead and good night to me…
but for now to see you in morrow….

  17. And a very Good Morning once again to all!

  18. Rap icons Lil’ Wayne and Eminem stopped by Weekend Update to drop their edgy Valentine’s Day song. Unfortunately, there is nothing nice you can say to a woman that ends with “knife.” This one’s really funny. Take a look: (Hope it sticks here)

Reader….! You got day off on Friday…! Right…!?
All those are so funny…! Never knew ” T ” plays such an important role in a man’s life..!

      • MonaLisa,

I have a long weekend. National holiday tomorrow for Prohet’s birthday… then friday.. then I go to sleep again in the office on duty from thaturday…

  20. Thanks, Reader. Your 1427 emails were good for something apparently.

The one about Santa Claus is so true, it made me laugh out loud. Were you not going to grow a beard shortly?

    • Lots of humor. But mostly adult and only for men.

There was a long one about Chinese women being unscrupulous and opportunists. Most of them with wine glasses and nothing on. All the pictures were pasted on US Visas!!!

    • Oh yes.. the beard…. as soon as I can play this one without karaoke

We all came out to Montreux
      On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
      We didn’t have much time
      Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky, smoke on the water

They burned down the gamblin’ house,
It died with an awful sound
and Funky Claude was running in and out
      Pulling kids out the ground
      When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky, smoke on the water

We ended up at the Grand Hotel
It was empty cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside
      Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We make a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
      I know, I know we’ll never forget
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky ,smoke on the water

Or if I begin to look like David Lee Roth.. what say?

      • Reader,

Start practicing and call me in an hour for an audition…

      • Reader…
Now you are so hung up to your beard thing like AB…it sounds like an obsession now…! 🙂
        He looks impressive though…don’t know about you however… Wear Santa’s fake beard…take a pic..and send it over… 🙂

      • MonaLisa,

I am 21 years younger to AB.

AB looked much better when he was young. Not that he looks bad now. He doesn’t drink so he still has that unfattened, lean emotional face. He doesn’t look like a bald owl with an hangover which normally happens after 60.

I don’t drink either. So, if I can get a wig like his, I can hope to have that look one day. Even more, I plan to have a beard right up to here.

One can replicate everything about AB except his eyes and baritone voice. Those are out of this world.

  21. Sharmila,

If you are here. Please delete both my entries that are in moderation. I am repeating them with the correct email ID.

  22. Here’s some more for men, by my personal favorite Man’s Man. In case you wonder who this is, see Reader’s #12.

Well, there was no sex for 14 days.” -on getting the cold shoulder from his wife after backing President George W. Bush at the Republican Convention

“To those critics who are so pessimistic about our economy, I say, Don’t be economic girlie men!” –at the Republican convention

“If they don’t have the guts to come up here in front of you and say, ‘I don’t want to represent you, I want to represent those special interests, the unions, the trial lawyers … if they don’t have the guts, I call them girlie men.” –describing Democratic lawmakers in California

“All of a sudden, we see riots, we see protests, we see people clashing. The next thing we know, there is injured or there is dead people. We don’t want to get to that extent.” –on the dangers posed by gay marriage

“It’s the most difficult [decision] I’ve made in my entire life, except the one I made in 1978 when I decided to get a bikini wax.” –announcing his gubernatorial candidacy on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno”

“I can promise you that when I go to Sacramento, I will pump up Sacramento.” –on “The Tonight Show”

“As you know, I don’t need to take any money from anybody. I have plenty of money myself. I will make the decisions for the people.”

“We have to make sure everyone in California has a great job. A fantastic job!”

“The public doesn’t care about figures.” -discussing his economic views

“Don’t worry about that.” -on the environment

“From the time they get up in the morning and flush the toilet, they’re taxed. Then they go and get the cup of coffee, they’re taxed….This goes on all day long. Tax, tax, tax.”

“I saw this toilet bowl. How many times do you get away with this — to take a woman, grab her upside down, and bury her face in a toilet bowl? I wanted to have something floating there … The thing is, you can do it, because in the end, I didn’t do it to a woman — she’s a machine! We could get away with it without being crucified by who-knows-what group.” -describing a scene in “Terminator 3”

“This is really embarrassing. I just forgot our state governor’s name, but I know that you will help me recall him.” –speaking to a taxpayer advocacy group

“As much as when you see a blonde with great tits and a great ass, you say to yourself, ‘Hey, she must be stupid or must have nothing else to offer,’ which maybe is the case many times. But then again there is the one that is as smart as her breasts look, great as her face looks, beautiful as her whole body looks gorgeous, you know, so people are shocked.” –in an interview with Esquire

“The best activities for your health are pumping and humping.”

“Having a pump is like having sex. I train two, sometimes three times a day. Each time I get a pump. It’s great. I feel like I’m coming all day.”

“I think that gay marriage should be between a man and a woman.”

  23. Renate,

You kidding?!!! This one in an hour?…

  24. Lol…You guys are still under infuence of Ecstacy…!? 🙂

  25. Hey!

My video has the right side cut off! That’s where all the action is.

  26. One more, its better anyway:

  27. HELP! What’s wrong with my embeds????

  28. Reader,

What have you done to me? I should be at work and instead I am on a nostalgic ride back into my teenage years.

Here’s Ian at his screaming best.

Oh, did you know he also sang the part of Jesus in “Jesus Christ Superstar”, one of the best rock albums in my humble opinion?

  29. Renate,

The 1973 HD is the best. Is that you near the stage?…

I like the signature tune.. rhumpum pum.. has a haunting smokey feel… 🙂

  30. Reader,

    Oh, I am! Anderson, too:

  31. Sometimes his flute goes on trips without him:

When NASA astronaut Cady Coleman blasted off into space, up to the International Space Station orbiting some 200 miles above Earth, she brought music with her — music with several famous pedigrees.

In addition to bringing her own personal flute, Coleman brought a pennywhistle from Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains, an old Irish flute from Matt Malloy of The Chieftains and a flute from Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull.

In an Earth-to-space interview, All Things Considered host Melissa Block asks what it’s like to play a flute and experience weightlessness.

“It’s just really different,” Coleman says. “I’ve been having the nicest time up in our Cupola — it’s a module that has windows all the way around. I just float around in there and play with my eyes closed. What’s really funny to me is that I’ll suddenly run into something that [I] had no idea was so close. It’s neat to float around and not know quite where you are, but still be creating your own little world with music.”

Coleman says the acoustics depend on the module, but she prefers the Cupola because nobody can hear her in other parts of the large space station. Commander Scott Kelly says this interview was only the second time he’d seen or heard Coleman play.

Kelly is the brother-in-law of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head last month. Given that he’s so far away, Block asks how that adds to the difficulty of helping his family deal with the trauma of the incident.

“You know, I think it’d be hard being anywhere — being in an isolated environment presents its own special difficulties,” Kelly says. “We have telephone and e-mail. There’s the ability to communicate, to be able to support my brother and Gabby in person. But I understand that this is my place and I’ve got a job to do, so I’m getting along fine.”

Block asks Kelly if he has a different perspective on the shootings.

“If you were to ask me that right when this happened, I probably would have said yes,” Kelly says. “But I think now, after time has passed, I would say probably not. Certainly, my life has changed up here since the accident. I used to, in my spare time, look out the window and [take] pictures of the Earth. Now I spend more of my spare time on the telephone and with e-mail and following the news than I did before this tragedy.”

Kelly is due to return to earth next month. His twin brother Mark Kelly — Congresswoman Giffords’ husband — is slated to command his own shuttle flight in April.

  32. Reader,

No comment on the Gethsemane song? In my eyes that is a masterpiece.

  33. Damn, I can’t even spell evil! Time to go to work and mess up a few experiments! 👿

    Tata for now….

  34. MonaLisa,

Must hit the sack.. bed beckons…

    Guuuuuuuuuuuuuddddd Nnnnnnnaaaaaaaiiiiiiittttttttttttttt

  35. Sharmila,

Sometimes I wonder – do you mid us going off on tangents like we do, with Reader as our Magister Ludi, Joseph Knecht (fresh out of Hermann Hesse’s Das Glasperlenspiel – The Glass Bead Game)?

  36. Sharmila, Reader and all,

    Google/Wiki letdown:

As I typed in the name Joseph Knecht, I had a moment of doubt – wasn’t it Josef instead? Both are equally common in Germany and it has been a few years since I read the novel.

Naturally I was too lazy to go the 20 feet or so to the bookshelf, so I did a quick-check on google.

    1.090.000 hits for Josef
    2.760.000 hits for Joseph

    Ok.

10 minutes later I was sure it was Josef and went to check the book.

    Josef it is!!!! 😳

Now pray tell me, who can I trust if not google??? 😥

    • Then again, if i do a phrase search on google advanced search, Josef wins out to Joseph 52.000 to 26.000.

Haha, can you see I am supposed to clean my house??? Any distraction is good enough right now…… 🙂

  37. Renate,

I am not Josef. I am just another reader.

Josef means God. It’s the name of Lord Shiva.

Josef is Yusuf which is Yeshu which is Eshu which is Eshwar in Sanskrit.

The world is called Vishwa which is the residence of Eshwar.

Eshwar Satya hai: God is the Truth; Satya hi Shiv hai: Truth is Shiva; Shiv hi sunder hai: Shiva is beautiful.

Google the word Reader, you’ll get over 500 million hits in 0.5 seconds.

I am more pervading than Josef.. 🙂

    • Haha, Reader, who is more pervasive than God, thank you for enlightening me.

The Glass Bead Game is a game which brings all known sciences together in a playful yet sacred way. One theme leads to another in a symphony of knowledge and Josef Knecht the Master gently leads the players.

      A book worth reading.

    • Renate,

The noun form of Eshwar is derived from the article Esha which means ‘This’ and ‘Thus’

So, the objectivity is in the meaning and usage of the words. ‘This’ may refer to an object or subject, ‘thus’ may refer to a process.

    • One word for subject, object and process?

      God is almighty.

      • “This” is an article. It precedes both ‘subjects’ and ‘objects’

If I say This is Renate. So are you a Subject or an Object?

“Thus” is an article that concludes the description of a process.

That article in Sanskrit is “Esha”

The noun form is Eshwar or Eshu.

In esoteric terms it precedes and also concludes everything.

      • “Almighty” is an adjective that describes one of the assumed qualities of the assumed God.

      • Almighty is the quality of having all the strengths both those that are required and those that may be unnecessary.

  38. Sanskrit is a very precise language, is it not?. Why is it not spoken in its original form any more?

It seems to me that every time you want to define something you use Sanskrit and then translate for us.

  39. Renate,

Sanskrit is one language I found where words have been used first time. It’s like an etymological source of languages.

I am comfortable with Sanskrit as perhaps you’d be with Latin or Greek.

Many words are common to Sanskrit, Greek, Latin and Roman.

    Like the word Mundus.

The constellatories of hymns in Rig Veda are called Mandal.

The Roman emperor Frederick I used the word “Mundus” for a world of human enterprise. Which is exactly what Mandal means!

  40. Reader…
How is it decided what is required and what is unnecessary for almighty..!? who will decided that..!?

    • MonaLisa,

Almighty.. is all mighty… all the strengths… it’s a qualitative term used for describing God’s competence.

      Who can assess that competence?

I’d say technically no one is qualified.

But practically we know a lot of Priests who speak in the name of God.

  41. Yes, Mundus means world in Latin. Not only of human enterprise, but also in the physical sense.

You mean Barbarossa, the Hohenstauf, always a favorite of mine. But surely you do not approve of the crusades?

    • Renate,

No, I don’t approve of the crusade. Only referring to the words and linguistics.

The word Mandal is used commonly, as you said, to any multi-faceted systems.

The solar system is called Surya Mandal.. that is the Sun’s world…

    • I like that word – Surya Mandal.

      Is there a Moon’s World?

      • It’s a language of words, Renate. Use it as and when you need it.

Chandra (Moon) Mandal, Akaash (Sky) Mandal, Renate (Renate) Mandal…

        🙂

      • Correction: Use it as and how you need it…

      • I do feel like in a game of associations here sometimes.

        Fun, na?

Here’s an old song about Barbarossa, who is not dead, but sits in a mountain called Kyffhäuser, at a stone table which his beard grew through during the centuries, and will wake at the country’s greatest hour of need.

  42. Lol Reader…
My Qs are in context to your statement above about the same… 🙂
Exactly my point…No one is qualified to decide what is necessary and what is un necessary for almighty…on other hand we have no knowledge of what those traits are…and what almighty is…we know just nothing…nothing about Him..

    • MonaLisa,

Agreed. Except the last three words…

      “Nothing about Him..”

About Him is still an assertion.

The right way of saying it would be to stop at ‘nothing’… “we know just nothing”.. period

  43. Reader…
    Accepted…
I used it for our understanding…as God is addressed as Thee,Him…Almighty…

  44. Renate,

The Barbarosa video. I couldn’t catch the words. Too much echo. Is it in English?

    Are you making me jealous?

What a beard, man! I’ll need another 50 years to grow something like that…

  45. Reader,

Well, his beard is about 800 years ahead of yours. Start growing, I want to live to see it some day.

The lyrics are in German, a poem by Friedrich Rückert, set to music.

  46. Reader,

You ready? This is going to be long….

  47. Der alte Barbarossa
    Friedrich Rückert

    Der alte Barbarossa,
    Der Kaiser Friederich,
    Im unterird’schen Schlosse
    Hält er verzaubert sich.

    …. ….In his castle underground
    …. ….Old Barbarossa dwells,
    …. ….The emp’ror Frederic,
…. ….Bound fast by magic spells.

    Er ist niemals gestorben,
    Er lebt darin noch jetzt;
    Er hat, im Schloß verborgen,
    Zum Schlaf sich hingesetzt.

…. ….He did not die, he lives
    …. ….Still in the castle’s keep;
    …. ….From human scan concealed,
…. ….He sat him down to sleep.

    Er hat hinabgenommen
    Des Reiches Herrlichkeit
    Und wird einst wiederkommen
    Mit ihr zu seiner Zeit.

…. ….And with him he took down
…. ….The glories of his realm,
…. ….And when his time shall come,
    …. ….Again he’ll seize the helm.

    Der Stuhl ist elfenbeinern,
    Darauf der Kaiser sitzt;
    Der Tisch ist marmelsteinern,
    Worauf sein Haupt er stützt.

…. ….The throne whereon he sits
    …. ….Of ivory is made;
…. ….Of marble is the table
…. ….Whereon he rests his head.

Sein Bart ist nicht von Flachse,
    Er ist von Feuersglut,
    Ist durch den Tisch gewachsen,
    Worauf sein Kinn ausruht.

…. ….His beard is not of flax,
…. ….Like flaming fire it glows,
…. ….Is through the table grown,
…. ….Where arms and chin repose.

Er nickt als wie im Traume,
    Sein Aug’ halb offen zwinkt,
    Und je nach langem Raume
    Er einem Knaben winkt.

    …. ….He nods as in a dream,
    …. ….His eyes half open blink;
    …. ….Anon unto a page
…. ….He calls with beck and wink.

Er spricht im Schlaf zum Knaben:
“Geh hin vors Schloß, o Zwerg,
Und sieh, ob noch die Raben
    Herfliegen um den Berg!

    …. ….In sleep he speaks, “O boy,
    …. ….”Unto the entrance hie,
…. ….”See if the ravens still
    …. ….”Around the mountain fly!

    Und wenn die alten Raben
    Noch fliegen immerdar,
So muß ich auch noch schlafen
    Verzaubert hundert Jahr!”

…. ….”And if the ancient ravens
…. ….”Are flying round and round,
    …. ….” I still must slumber here,
    …. ….”A hundred years spell-bound.

    • Thank you, Renate.

      Nice rhyme and rhythm.

How does an emperor get bound in his own castle? Ravens eat the food offered at funerals. The emperor awaits his own liberation.

Great narration. Time stands still right until the last line, when it suddenly seems to take measure!!!

      • I’m surprised myself that Rückert places him into his castle in the poem.

According to the legend he sits deep in a mountain, unseen and inaccessible.

      • Renate,

Is it a legend or a myth? Do you mean barbarossa really happend in Rome?

      • It’s very difficult to draw boundaries of those times… mainly 10-11 century Europe… So many feudal states and so many wars.

Fredrick’s son used Barbarossa’s (his father) name and reputation to enter into contracts and deals with the clergy. The story of the cave and ravens were part of that. There was also someone who was later called his reincarnation.

It’s similar to something Jayalalitha in Tamilnadu, India, does with her mentor MGR’s name.

      • Reader,

He is real enough. Roman Emperors, in the 12th century, were mostly from Germany, lived in Germany (when not in wars abroad), but claimed the whole Western Roman Empire and lived in constant power-strife with the Church, which of course also claimed Rome and the Empire for itself.

Making peace with pope, he went on a crusade (the third) and drowned crossing a river on his horse.

He was a larger-than-life charismatic personality and so became a legend

      • You are right. Barbarossa died in one of the wars. The spell-bound, solitary confinement in a cave or his castle doesn’t match that part of history.

      • Haha, I guess it was Kaiser Wilhelm, the last, who claimed to be his reincarnation. What a hoot….

The being only asleep is an old theme, compare to King Arthur, who is still alive in Avalon.

      • Are there no old heroes asleep in India?

Or have they all become Gods?

        Easier for them in a non-monotheistic religion…..

      • I wish King Arthur was alive. He would have done something about this Queen.

      • Mono or non-mono- theistic religions.. all have the same style and genre of immortalizing heroes one way or another…

We have horror stories of sleeping giants…

      • There must be worse than the Queen lurking in the future, or Arthur would have come back already.

      • But, note this, no one in our literature has that kind of dashing beard… that one is unique… under the table did you say?… I must find out the secret…

Guy must be eating fertilizers for the crop to grow like that…

      • Have you ever read the very first volume of Asterix and Obelix?

      • I love Asterix and Obelix! Thanks for the video..will get the English version.

      • You need to be patient, “it” does not start until after 5 min….

      • Renate,

Thanks. Watching it on youtube. Isn’t there an English version? My German has never gone beyond Hail, Hitler! 😦

  48. Now you must read it while listening to the song.

  49. Reader…
Light bearer…First Ray of light….The Sun….is considered symbol of Lucifer…! Now you decide…
    Its He or She…
    Good or Evil…
    Life saver or destroyer…

    • If it is good and a life saver ofcourse it would be ‘He’… but some older prohets like Isaiah and all in the Jewish scriptures have called lucifer a bad angel… falling off the clouds without a parachute…. etc..

I am not sure about the details.. I remember reading it somewhere…

      • Yes, and angels are supposed to be sexless.

But nobody call their girls Michael, Gabriel or Raphael.

  50. hahahaha…Reader…you are soooooo….very…gender biased..
    lol…yet you talk to us….I wonder…!

    • You say things in that order:

Look how you said what you did…

      He or She…
      Good or Evil…
      Life saver or destroyer…

You asked me to choose… even a child would connect He, Good and Life Saver as one set and She, Evil and destroyer as another…

      That’s not a bias.. it’s pure mathematics… 🙂

  51. Reader…
Now you make me laugh…! This Lucifer story is not new for us…we have been hearing it from you since long…
That Lucifer is She..and she is a Devil…so entire gender falls into that category…

  52. Reader, you are wrong.

    Period.

    Nighy night.

    😛 😛 😛 😛
